Contribute, learn & live at Hakea
An off-grid, family-oriented community near Raglan, Aotearoa, exploring nature-connected living, regenerative practices, creativity and community.

Walk the land with us
A short wander around Hakea — the forest, the gardens, the harbour and the people who care for it.
A way of life, shared
We welcome people who are genuinely interested in being part of this way of life — people who enjoy getting hands-on, sharing their skills, learning new things and contributing to something that extends beyond themselves.
Our approach is based on mutual contribution. We share our time, knowledge and experience, while recognising that everyone has something different to bring.
Contribution, learning & creativity
Life at Hakea is a combination of practical contribution, learning, creativity and shared community experiences. Depending on the season and what's happening on the land, there may be opportunities to get involved in:
- Food forest development
- Permaculture & regenerative gardening
- Herbalism
- Off-grid systems
- Natural building
- Practical & creative projects
We also value the opportunity to learn alongside one another. We encourage people to bring their own interests, ideas and skills, creating space for knowledge to flow in both directions.
Hosting with care
Hosting people requires care, time, food and infrastructure, so we approach each arrangement thoughtfully. Visitors make an agreed financial contribution towards their stay and food. The details are discussed before arrival so everyone understands what's included and can decide whether the arrangement works for them.
We eat natural and organic food and are happy to adapt to each person's way of eating.
We value people who are comfortable…
- Taking responsibility for your own needs
- Caring for shared spaces
- Using resources mindfully
- Participating with consideration for the wider community

At the moment we have one private room in the community house. Staying there is a privilege, and we check it is free before we arrange anything.
